The “hot stove” has been lukewarm at best for us Cardinal fans so far this year.  The front office inked Brad Penny to a deal at the meetings, however, honestly did it quiet enough that not many rumors swirled about it ahead of time.

Going into the offseason, fans and front office personnel have agreed, Matt Holiday is the beginning of this offseason for the Cardinals.  While most of the fanbase have taken a pessimistic view towards that signing recently, as of last night negotiations have heated up and has the rumor mill buzzing loudly about Holiday’s possible return to the Cardinals.

Reports have the offer at 8-years and near $130 million, while the details of guaranteed years and option clauses as well as possible “out” clauses have not been discussed openly with anyone outside of the negotiations.  Recent details are hinting at a deal no longer than 5 years and Scott Boras and Matt Holiday are not finding any other suitors.  Also being reported today is that Matt Holiday is interested in staying in St. Louis, the first we have heard that he has a preference towards the Gateway city.

Can the Cardinals close this deal?  Is there a team waiting in the wings to outbid them?  Time will tell…

As a footnote, former Redbird Prospect Brett Wallace, who was sent to Oakland in the Holiday trade, is rumored to be heading to Toronto shortly after the Halladay blockbuster is closed.  Toronto is in need of a third baseman and it should mean immediate playing time for Wallace.
