According to a published statement from a representative for David Freese, the player is “not an alcoholic” and this is an “isolated incident”.
However, prior to coming to the Cardinals, Mr. Freese was involved in another alcohol related incident in 2007. While the alcohol related charge was dropped, he did plead guilty to obstructing an officer and was placed on three years probation. There is no word as of yet on what effect the incident Saturday morning will have on his current probationary status.
In addition to these incidents, David was also involved in an automobile accident last spring that lead to a subsequent surgery that cost him most of his season.
It seems that David has a few issues and a few things to work through. Entering the EAP is a step in the right direction. Let’s hope that the young man can buckle down and show the dedication and maturity that a starting third baseman on a major league club needs.

Good for him, recognizing the problem before it got too far out of hand… And best of luck to him.
