Looking back over the years, I sometimes get the opportunity to reflect on what led me to this point. I enjoy having the opportunity to share my “assault on words” as a mentor puts it. There are a few journalists and sportscasters that inspired me and gave me the drive to pursue this as a career. Jack Buck. Joe Buck. Bob Costas. (Yes, I’m a St. Louis sports fan, deal with it.)
Then there’s Hall of Famer Peter Gammons. Watching Mr. Gammons turn an already successful run as a print journalist into a hall of fame career by joining ESPN some 20+ years ago.
Today, amidst all of the rumors and whirlwind that is the baseball Winter Meetings, word was released that immediately following these meetings, Peter Gammons would leave his highly respected position at ESPN to pursue “other opportunities”. Later in the day, another press release, from another source, confirmed where Mr. Gammons would be taking up residence.
Gammons will join MLB Network and MLB.com. Serving to cover many of the “events” that surround baseball (Winter Meetings, First Year Player Draft, Trade Deadline), appearing on the nightly Hot Stove show, and providing commentary elsewhere while continuing to write for MLB.com, there will be no shortage of Mr. Gammons in the near future.
All that being said, he will be missed greatly at ESPN and by those that cannot receive the MLB Network, the latter being a group of people that I belong to.
Mr. Gammons has been a huge inspiration to many pundits like myself and I look forward to his coverage on a new station, new website, and hopefully providing the same great coverage as always.
From all of us here at BaseballDigest.com, best of luck to you, Mr. Gammons.

As a footnote to this article…
Peter penned his “goodbye” from ESPN today. It is, single handed, one of the best pieces of literary work that I have ever had the pleasure of reading.
If you are a true baseball fan, if you have ever wondered why some of us look up to this man, if you wonder what it is that makes those of us that do this for a living look to his career for guidance, this article exemplifies it all.
