When discussing the recent acquisition of Brad Penny with many of the pundits covering the Redbirds around cyber-space, it seems that the reaction is “ho-hum” at best. A solid pitcher that adds a solid number 4 or 5 arm to the rotation, a positive addition to the ball club, and an affordable solution to one of the issues that needed to be addressed going into this offseason, he seems to have fallen victim to a fan base that is eager to hear that it’s team has made a major announcement and instead was given one of much less importance.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited to have Brad on the team. At 31 years old, the young man brings an interesting combination of raw talent and never realized potential to a team that boasts one of the greatest pitching coaches of all time. If he can settle in and take the advice of Dave Duncan, Brad Penny may turn out to be one of the best “sleeper” signings of this offseason, and it happened very early on.
That being said, the rotation is settled, the bullpen is where it will probably remain for the time being, and now it’s time to address the need of solidifying the lineup around baseball’s best hitter.
