Utley and Lee Come Through for Phils in Game One Victory  | read this item

Throughout this World Series, instead of doing straight game recaps, I will be highlighting/criticizing each game, and I will also be giving you my Phillies hero/goat for each game depending on the outcome. For straight game recaps, make sure to check out all of Mark Healey’s stories on the main page. Game one is pretty simple for me to sum up. The Phillies once again got dominate pitching from Cliff Lee, (9 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 10 K), and they got another player to step up who has not done it all postseason. Chase Utley got the scoring going with a solo shot in the 3rd inning, and then another solo shot in the 6th inning to make it 2-0 Phils. Utley became only the second left-handed hitter in World Series history to hit two homeruns off of a left-handed starter…the other one? That would be the “Great Bambino” Babe Ruth.

Therefore, because of Lee’s dominant pitching performance to shut down the potent lineup of the Yankees, and because Utley got the scoring started, and the only two runs off of C.C. Sabathia, I have to make Lee and Utley dual heroes. In terms of some other notes about the game, here are my thoughts:

-The Yankees bullpen struggled again like I predicted, and the Phillies continued to add on runs, with the final score being 6-1 Phils.
-The Phillies were patient at the plate, which has been a key for them all postseason long.
-The Phillies continued to battle and did not allow not scoring in the first inning with the bases loaded affect them.
-11 out of the last 12 teams to win game one in the World Series have gone on to win the series…the Phillies got the first part done, now we’ll wait and see what happens the rest of the way.

Pedro Martinez faces off against A.J. Burnett in game two. It should be another exciting game at Yankee Stadium.
