Dan Haren, of the Arizona Diamondbacks, gave up six runs in five innings pitched, including a two run homerun by Chase Utley (25) that traveled 411 feet to right centerfield, a three run homerun by Ryan Howard (31) to left centerfield, and a solo shot to Jayson Werth (26) to straightaway centerfield, which traveled a remarkable 420 feet! Howard and Werth went back-to-back in the fifth inning for the second time this year, and the seventh time the Phillies have gone back-to-back overall this season. Werth added another solo shot (27) in the 7th inning for good measure, hitting it to the opposite field this time, and ending the Phillies onslaught of runs for the night.
Lee sure did get the run support he expected after the trade to the Phillies, as eight runs was the most the Phils scored since he came over from the Indians. Lee even chimed in on the offense himself, as he had as many hits in the game, (2), as he gave up. Charlie Manuel, Manager of the Phillies, commented on Lee’s performance after the game: “He uses his fastball a lot, and he’s around the plate, which is why he gets the big numbers on the strikeouts. He hits a little bit too. We might have to move him up in the order.” The crowd, who gave Lee a standing ovation in his 8th inning at bat, came out in the masses last night. In fact, the 45,356 fans in attendance was the largest crowd at Citizen’s Bank Park this season, and the 7th largest overall in CBP history. The fans saw Lee, who has emerged as the club ace. With the rest of the rotation pitching well, the Phillies look to be a dangerous foe in the upcoming postseason.
