Werth Named To All-Star Team; Coste Let Go  | read this item

Jayson Werth joined fellow teammates Raul Ibanez, Shane Victorino, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, and Manager Charlie Manuel on the NL All-Star Roster today. Werth is replacing injured outfielder Carlos Beltran of the New York Mets. Werth, who is having a breakout year, has 20 homers this season coming into play tonight, and he has to be excited about making his first All-Star Game. The Phillies now will have their entire starting outfield on the All-Star Roster.

In other news, backup catcher Chris Coste was released today by the Phillies, probably to make room for outfielder John Mayberry, Jr., since the Phillies needed to open up a roster spot with the return of Raul Ibanez from the DL. You have to feel for Coste, because his “feel-good” story has been well documented, and there is even going to be a movie made about him potentially. At the same time, Coste may get more playing time now. He was picked up by the Houston Astros, so he should get a chance to play there more than he was this season with Carlos Ruiz as the every day catcher in Philly, and with Paul Bako filling in on occasion too.

The All Star Game disappoints as Ryan Howard had a chance to bring in the winning run with a base hit. Ryan was also robbed of the final round of the Home Run Derby as he was only one behind with 15 HR’s in the first 2 rounds, and one of the HR’s had interference by a fan and should not have been called a HR.

  2. Hometeamgal says:

The HR that had interference was not Ryan’s, but either Cruz or Fielder’s.
