After winning game one of the series 22-1 on Monday night, the Phillies took a step backward, as they were only able to score six runs combined in the next two games. They lost 4-3 on Tuesday night in a game they should have won, and they won a great game on Wednesday night in a hard fought battle, in which Shane Victorino, now an All-Star, hit a walk-off single to win the game in the bottom of the ninth 3-2. The Phillies offense came alive again tonight though. In a game where they really needed it, because Jamie Moyer had a rough outing, the Phillies put up nine runs to beat the Reds in the finale 9-6. It was a new age shootout, in which both teams were scoring in bunches.
Some of the highlights for the Phils included Chase Utley hitting an inside the park homerun, a rare feat for sure, and Jayson Werth hitting a more traditional homerun over the 401 foot sign in centerfield. The Phillies also got it done with some “small ball” tonight by stealing bases, moving runners over, and even scoring on a passed ball. It was a fun game to watch for sure, as I was in attendance as a fan. To cap it off, there was a fireworks show after the game! Kudos to the Phillies for putting on a fantastic show after the game, one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. It is always more fun to watch fireworks after a victory.
Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention, Chan Ho Park looked great in relief, and Brad Lidge looked lights out once again, as he closed it out with a couple strikeouts in the ninth inning. This team should be fun to watch the second half of the season, but first they have to take care of business this weekend, and sweep the Pirates, so they can have that momentum going into the All-Star Break.
This was an exciting game filled with something for every fan. Great that the Phils have several players in the All Star Game. The Phillies are also getting good press all around. Let’s take it one game, one win at a time.
