WP – Sabathia (8-5) LP – Baker (6-7)
When Robinson Cano gets a hit with runners in scoring position, you know things are going well. Cano’s 2-run single that snapped his 0-22 skid with RISP was part of the Yankees 10-2 onslaught against the Minnesota Twins. It was more than enough support for CC Sabathia, who allowed a run on 3 hits in 7 innings to improve to 8-5.
The Bombers jumped right on Twins’ starter and loser Scott Baker (6-7) in the 1st inning and never looked back. Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira reached on singles and Hideki Matsui brought home the game’s first run with a sacrifice fly. Francisco Cervelli, who knocked in a pair of runs in the game, added a sac fly of his own in the 2nd and Teixeira delivered an RBI single for a 2-0 lead. It was one of four hits on the night for the Yankees first baseman.
Twins center fielder Carlos Gomez momentarily kept his team in the game when he robbed Alex Rodriguez of a grand slam in the 4th (A-Rod was credited with the Yankees’ third sac fly of the night), but the Yankees lineup was not to be denied. Cano’s base hit was part of a 5-run 6th inning that put the game out of reach.
Sabathia cruised along, throwing 100 pitches, 68 of which were strikes. The only damage done to him was a solo home run by Michael Cuddyer in the 2nd inning. (The Twins added a run against Brett Tomko in the 8th.) He walked 1, struck out 3 and lowered his season ERA to 3.70.
This game was all about the bats though, as the Yankees pounded out 16 hits to remain one game back of Boston in the AL East.
Game Notes
The Yankees have beaten the Twins in 13 of their last 17 meetings.
Sabathia completed at least 7 innings for the 12th time in 18 starts.
Brett Gardner had 3 hits in the game, including his 5th triple. That’s the 2nd highest total overall in the AL and places him in a tie for third place in the category.
