With the big league club struggling, I thought it would be appropriate to write about the Double A Team of the Phillies, who have a lot of young talent and right now are playing extremely well as a team. The Reading Phils are 45-33, in second place in the Eastern League Southern Division. They have also been red hot lately, winning six out of their last eight games, including taking 3-out-of-4 from the Trenton Thunder, the defending Eastern League Champions, this past weekend at Waterfront Park. I had the privilege of covering the game on Sunday night in which Reading won 8-3, and they pounded out 14 hits.
Highly touted outfield prospect, Michael Taylor, went 3-for-5 in the game, which included a homerun, double, four RBI, and two runs scored. After the Phillies lost 8-2 on Saturday’s first game of a doubleheader, they went on to win three straight games in dominating fashion, by the scores of 7-2, 8-3, and 12-2. Both the offense and the pitching were impressive in this weekend series with the Thunder.
Afterward I spoke with some of the Phillies top prospects, including the aforementioned Michael Taylor, outfielder Jeremy Slayden, and top pitching prospect, Kyle Drabek, the son of Doug Drabek, who won two Cy Young Awards during his playing days. Within the next week, I will have individual stories on each of these players, so look out for that, because some of these players could be wearing the Phillies red and white pinstripes someday soon. Also, coming up later today, a full preview of the Mets-Phillies series at Citizen’s Bank Park.
Glad to hear that the World Champion Phillies have some good prospects coming out of the AA Reading Phils team–We could certainly use some help on the pitcher’s mound!
