WP – Sabathia (7-4) LP – Pelfrey (5-3)
The Yankees picked up where they left off in the Subway Series, drubbing the Mets 9-1 tonight at Citi Field. The last time the two teams met on June 14, the Yankees pounded Johan Santana in 15-0 white washing at Yankee Stadium. That was the same series that Luis Castillo committed the “E-4 heard ’round the world“. Tonight’s game was a combo of both of those Yankees victories- great pitching, great hitting, and sloppy Mets play. They didn’t even need the birthday boy, the now 35-yr old Derek Jeter, who sat out the game with a bad cough.
CC Sabathia was outstanding in winning his 7th game of the season. The big man showed no signs of the bicep tightness that knocked him from his start last Sunday in the 2nd inning. He retired the first 12 Mets he faced and retired the side in order in 6 of the 7 innings he worked. His lone “bad” inning was the 5th when he allowed a home run to Gary Sheffield and worked his way out of further trouble to preserve a 4-1 lead. Sabathia’s fastball topped out at 98 mph and was consistently in the mid-90s.
The Yankees built their lead on three Met errors in the 2nd inning. David Wright made a nice barehand scoop of Melky Cabrera’s tapper, but his throw sailed wide, putting the Melkman on second base to start the frame. Ramiro Pena put the Yankees on the board with an RBI double and scored when Sabathia singled back up the middle. Brett Gardner reached on a bloop single, but Mets starter Mike Pelfrey appeared to be out of trouble when he got Johnny Damon to hit a potential double play grounder. The problem with potential is that it doesn’t always pan out. Shortstop Alex Cora threw the ball into right field, allowing Sabathia to score the Yankees third run. The Yankees made it 4-0 when first baseman Nick Evans booted Mark Teixeira’s routine grounder for the Mets’ third error of the inning.
Sheffield broke up the perfect game in the 5th with his 508th career home run. Fernando Tatis and Evans reached on singles, putting two men aboard with one out. But Sabathia struck out Omir Santos and pinch-hitter Argenis Reyes. The Mets wouldn’t have another base runner the rest of the night.
The Yankees broke the game open in the 8th when Gardner (3rd) and Alex Rodriguez (11th) went deep against Elmer Dessens (aka, the Mets’ Brett Tomko). A-Rod’s 2-run shot made it a 7-1 game and gave him sole possession of 11th place on the all-time career home run list with 564 dingers, one more than Reggie Jackson.
Game Notes
CC Sabathia pitched 7 innings, the 9th time in his last 10 starts that he’s gone 7 or more innings.
Brett Gardner had a career high 5 hits, falling a double short of hitting for the cycle. He’s hitting .355 since May 1st. He also stole his 17th bases in 19 tries.
Rafael Palmiero is next up for A-Rod on the career home run list with 569.
