Nick Blackburn got the first two outs of the 8th inning easily. His pitch count was good. Then JJ Hardy blooped a single in to centerfield. Then Jason Kendall drilled a double off of the top of the wall in left centerfield. Hardy scored to tie the game at three, and the ball snuck by catcher Joe Mauer. Kendall took off toward third base. Blackburn, correctly backing up the play, threw toward third, but not quite close enough. The throw went into left field, Kendall scored, and the Brewers took a 4-3 lead. Blackburn got the final out of the eighth.

Trevor Hoffman came in and recorded the save, and the Twins grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory!

The Twins grabbed the early lead. Carlos Gomez led off the  ball game with a triple and scored on a Brendan Harris sacrifice fly. The Brewers tied the game an inning later when Braden Looper, the Brewers starting pitchers, singled in a run.

The score remained the same until the top of the 6th. With one out, Jason Kubel drilled the first pitch well into the right field bleachers for his 13th home run of the season. (It was his 8th home run this month) Michael Cuddyer hit a double on the next pitch. He was followed by Joe Crede who also doubled to score Cuddyer and give the Twins the 3-1 lead.

Jason Kendall cut the lead in half in the bottom of the 6th with an RBI single. The 3-2 score remained until Kendall’s next, ominous at bat in the bottom of the 8th inning.

The Twins loss dropped them back below .500 (36-37). The Brewers improved to 38-33, and beat the Twins for the first time in five attempts this season.

The teams will complete their season series on Thursday afternoon when Scott Baker will take the mound for the Twins against Mike Burns, making his first start for the Brewers.
