Even though it is only June, this is a big series for both teams. The Phillies could really put some distance between themselves and the Mets if they are able to sweep this series. The Phillies currently hold a three game lead over the Mets, so they could push it to six games. This is not out of the realm of possibility with the way the Phils have been playing on the road this season, and with the Mets hampered by injuries. This three game set with the Mets concludes a 10 game road trip for the Phils, and they could go anywhere from 8-2 on the trip to 5-5, depending on what they do in this series. The Mets and Phillies rivalry, over the past few years, has developed into one of the best in all of baseball. Make no mistake about it, these two teams do not like each other, and that passion comes out on the field. Here are the pitching matchups for the series and some other interesting tidbits to look at before the series commences tomorrow night:
Pitching Matchup
Mets Phillies
Tuesday: LHP Johan Santana (7-3) vs. LHP J.A. Haap (4-0)
Wednesday: RHP Mike Pelfrey (4-2) vs. LHP Cole Hamels (4-2)
Thursday: RHP Tim Redding (0-2) vs. LHP Jamie Moyer (4-5)
The first matchup tomorrow night should be a good one, as the rookie J.A. Haap tries to continue his success since being put into the starting rotation, but he will have the tough task of going up against one of the best, if not THE best, pitchers in all of baseball in Johan Santana. Haap is coming off of an impressive start of seven shutout innings against the Padres in which he picked up the victory. Although the Mets have won the last three starts against the Phillies that Santana has started, Santana is coming off a bit of a rough outing against the Pirates and the Phils offense is clicking on all cylinders right now. Check back here tomorrow afternoon for Part II of the Preview. Comments are welcomed from both Mets and Phillies fans, and anyone else that wants to share their opinion.
Tonight’s first game in the three game series with the Mets was similar to a playoff game. Of course, that cannot happen with the Phillies and the Mets. Let’s hope that these two teams are not still battling out in September; hopefully, the Phillies will put some room between the two teams with the Phils on top!
What has happened to our Phillies? This is the second series that they have been swept, first the Toronto Blue Jays and now, the Baltimore Orioles!!
Please give us some hope and understanding as to why they keep losing.
