Another Strong Start By Moyer, But Lidge and Feliz Blow Lead  | read this item

On Friday Night, Jamie Moyer pitched seven strong innings for the Phils, only giving up two runs against the Dodgers in his best start of the year, and he left the game with a 3-2 lead. J.C. Romero did his job in the eighth, and then Brad Lidge came on in the ninth with the score still 3-2 Phils. Lidge has been shaky at times this season, but he had converted five saves in a row going into last night’s game. Lidge was well on his way to converting six in a row and giving the Phils eight straight wins when he had two outs already and two strikes on Casey Blake, who then hit one off the end of the bat into left field.

Lidge proceeded to walk the next batter, and then the usually sure-handed Pedro Feliz made an error at third base on a ball hit right to him by catcher Russel Martin that would have ended the game. The next pitch by Lidge was ripped for a two run walk-off double by Andre Ethier to give the Dodgers a 4-3 victory. The Phils defense has been good all year, but this was one instance where it cost them. To make things worse, the Mets won last night, and now sit three games back of the Phils in the NL East.

Win some; lose some. Hopefully, The Fightin’ Phils will put some “fight” in Lidge, so that he will get his confidence back.

I don’t really care so much about the current game standings and the suddendly unimportant Mets. The Braves also are getting better. But really who cares? If the Phils take care of their own business, they will run away with the division. The key is staying healthy, unlike the Mets.
