Rookie Lefthander, J.A. Haap (4-0) pitched seven shutout innings to help defeat the Padres on Wednesday night 5-1. With Haap’s effort, the Phillies were able to sweep the Padres, and they have now won six in a row, sweeping back to back series. Ryan Howard chipped in with his 16th Homerun of the season to spark the offense. The Phillies now have two rookie left-handers in their starting rotation, and it will be interesting to watch how Haap and Antonio Bastardo pitch these next few weeks. The Phillies will continue to look for help in the starting rotation with Brett Myers on the shelf for most likely the rest of the season, but if their starting rotation continues to pitch the way it has the last couple weeks, they may not need any help.
The Phils currently hold a 3 1/2 game lead over the New York Mets for 1st place in the NL East, and they have a chance to pick up another half game if they can beat the Dodgers in tonight’s game. The Phils currently lead the Dodgers 3-0 in the top of the 7th inning, with Cole Hamels pitching a gem so far. The Phils will look to hang on here tonight and make it seven in a row, which would extend their longest winning streak of the season. Full recap on the game tonight will be posted on the site tomorrow night.
Reading this a couple of days later, it looks as if 7 will stand as their longest winning streak this season. Cole was AMAZING!
Looking ove rthese past postings, you are correct that it does seem as though the Phillies may have enough pitching within their system to fill their needs.. We’ll stay tuned.
