In the wake of injuries to Scott Kazmir and Akinora Iwamura, the Rays have promoted David Price from Triple A Durham, and he will start Monday in Cleveland. Price, a former number one draft pick as well as a post season hero last year, is among the most anticipated major league promotions of 2009, and the Rays need him.
Currently 23-23 and in fourth place, the Rays are entering a critical part of the season – it was in late May and June of 2008 that the Rays suprised the baseball world by moving into first place while carrying a winning record longer than any previous Rays club.
Price has built a 1-4 record for Durham this year, and manager Joe Maddon has indicated he will take a regular spot in the Rays rotation. Questions also abound in the bullpen, where Troy Percival is supposedly mulling retirement. Jason Isringhausen has recently comeback from injury. Besides being the overall number one draft pick in 2007, David Price also performed well in several of the Rays’ historic 2008 post season appearances.
The injury to second baseman Akinora Iwamura, the continued improvement of Dioner Navarro, Isringhausen and Carl Crawford, Jason Bartlett’s twisted ankle and Scott Kazmir’s injury must have Ron Porterfield, Paul Harker and the other members of the Rays’ Training and Conditioning staff pretty busy!
