Another Oliver Perez start, another Oliver Perez meltdown.

The Nationals (4-13) beat the Mets (8-10) and avoided the sweep by a score of 8-1.

The Mini Recap

Perez struggled the whole game.  He  did not register a 1-2-3 inning, allowed nine hits and three walks and most importantly, seven earned runs.  Casey Fossum was asked to contribute some mop-up duty, letting in some inherited runners and one of his own in 2 2-3 innings on the mound.  Pedro Feliciano and Brian Stokes each turned in solid innings.

The Mets bats were quieted by 22 year old rookie Jordan Zimmerman.  The only run came in the first inning on a Carlos Delgado triple.  After Zimmerman’s day was done, three Nats relievers combined to no-hit the Mets.

Just a miserable game on both side of the ball as the Mets could have earned a series sweep of the lowly Nats, but instead lost in a blowout.

On The Mound

Perez, for the third time in his four starts, failed to make it out of the fifth inning.  He lasted on 4 1-3 innings, allowing three walks, nine hits and two home runs.  Five runs came with Perez on the mound, and both of his runners left on base when he was pulled came around to score.  Perez needed 92 pitches, 59 of which went for strikes.

Another miserable performance for the $36 million man.  Look for Perez to be skipped the next time his start comes around.

Fossum, who has since been designated for assignment by the Mets, pitched 2 2-3 innings, walking three, allowing three hits and surrendering one run of his own.  He struck out two while on the bump.

Happy trails, Fossum.

Pedro Feliciano and Brian Stokes each pitched one inning.  Feliciano allowed one hit while striking out two.  Stokes didn’t let up a hit and struck out one.

At The Plate

A walk and a stolen base put Jose Reyes on second for the Mets first baserunner.  Daniel Murphy moved him to third with a groundout.  Carlos Beltran followed that up with a groundball.  Reyes broke for home and was tagged out as Ryan Zimmerman threw to Jesus Flores to get the out.  Beltran moved to second on the play and came around when Delgado tripled to centerfield.

And that was all she wrote.  The Mets picked up six hits, with only Delgado’s triple being the lone extra base hit.

Game Ball

Carlos Delgado: 1-4, RBI, 2 K

On Deck

The Mets welcome the Florida Marlins to Citi Field for the first time, starting tomorrow night at 7:10 p.m.
