What’s left to say?

The Cardinals (10-5) beat the Mets (6-8) by a score of 5-2.

The Mini Recap

John Maine struggled throughout the game, letting up seven hits and five earned runs in five 2-3 innings of work.  The bullpen kept the Cardinal quiet, but the Mets bats just weren’t there.

The team picked up on in the third on a Daniel Murphy RBI single and tacked on another in the ninth on a Carlos Beltran RBI double.

If you watched this game, you just knew the Mets weren’t going to win.  They had a tie in the third, but from there the Cardinals just took over the game.  They made Joel Piniero look like Cy Young.

On The Mound

Maine was erratic through his time on the mound.  He not only allowed the seven hits, but also walked five while striking out two.  He needed 111 pitches to get through his time on the mound.

Another messy start for the Mets.  If they don’t figure out what’s wrong with 3/5 of their rotation, they’re in big trouble.

Casey Fossum entered the game with the bases loaded for the second day in a row.  This time, he recorded an out and went on to pitch one inning while allowing one hit and striking out one. Brian Stokes threw 1 1-3 perfect innings of baseball.

Well, the bullpen looked good.

At The Plate

A tip of the cap to Piniero who pitched eight plus innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs.  He did not strike out a batter and walked two.

The Mets got on the board in the third inning when Luis Castillo took a one out walk and moved over on a Maine sacrifice.  After another walk to Jose Reyes, Murphy drove in Castillo with a single to centerfield.

The Mets were held in check, with Piniero setting down 13 in a row before David Wright doubled to lead off the ninth inning.  Beltran eventually drove in Wright with a double of his own.

And that was really it for the Mets bats.  Beltran picked up three of the Mets seven hits, with the rest going to Reyes, Murphy, Wright and Church.

The Mets bats just aren’t there right now.  I don’t know what it is.  Some nights they’re on and they just can’t score, other nights they just don’t show up to the park.

Game Ball

Carlos Beltran: 3-4, double, RBI

On Deck

The Mets finish out the series and hope to avoid the sweep tomorrow, starting at 1:40 p.m.
