CC Sabathia rolled through 7 2/3 innings of no-run ball en route to a win over the Kansas City Royals, 6-1.  The big lefty struck out six and walked none, allowing only six singles in the dominant effort.  CC got in a bit of jam in the 4th, when, with no out, Alberto Callaspo and David DeJesus hit consecutive singles.  CC promptly struck Billy Butler out on three pitches, burning a fastball on the inside half that Butler could only watch.  Two pitches later, Alex Gordon would ground into a double play to end the inning – and Sabathia would be out of the jam.  Damaso Marte pitched the final four outs, giving up one run on a walk and a double in the 9th.

Nick Swisher and Jorge Posada provided all the offense, batting in three runs apiece.  Posada had RBI doubles in the first and third innings, continuing to demonstrate the health of his shoulder by displaying excellent power.  Swisher, batting third, continued his power surge, first by lofting an RBI triple in the third inning passed the lunging Royals infielder-turned-outfielder Willie Bloomquist, and then by launching a two-run home run to left field in the sixth.  Nick – who got the start at first base due to Mark Teixeira sitting out with “birthday wrist” in the right hand  – also showed good glovework by twice backhanding short-hopped throws from CC on the wrong side of the bag.

Game Notes

Xavier Nady had two hits.  Cody Ransom – who will still vying for a bench spot when Alex Rodriguez returns – is off to a slow start, with only one hit in fourteen at-bats.  Robbie Cano had an 0-for-4 game, his first game this season without a hit.

Tomorrow afternoon at 2:10, Joba Chamberlain debuts against righty Gil Meche.  Gil gave up only one run in seven innings versus the White Sox, in a no-decision to open the season.  Joba looks to demonstrate his on-field prowess to go for a sweep and four-in-a-row.
