Profiling R.A. Dickey  | read this item

Tonight R.A. Dickey will make his first appearance in a Minnesota Twins uniform. I thought it was appropriate to introduce Mr. Robert Alan Dickey to the Twins community!

Dickey was a 1st round pick (18th overall) by the Texas Rangers in 1996. The 34-year old Dickey is from Nashville, TN and attended the University of Tennessee where he holds the school record for career wins with 38. Dickey also was a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team in Atlanta taking home a bronze medal.

Before joining the Mariners organization in 2008, Dickey spent his first six big league seasons with the Texas Rangers. Unfortunately, Dickey has never posted an ERA below 5.o9 in any big league season. In 2003, Dickey did win nine games while striking out 7.3 batter per 9 innings.

Career numbers for Dickey: a 21-27 record, a 5.57 ERA, a dangerous 10.9 hits/9 innings, and a mediocre 5.4 K/9 innings. His numbers certainly don’t jump off the page but coming out of the bullpen last year for Seattle, Dickey did go 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA and an opponent’s batting average of just .205 through 18 appearances.

If you didn’t know yet, R.A. is a knuckleball pitcher and the Twins have apparently always been enamored with the thought of a knuckleball pitcher in the Metrodome. Well, good thing they finally got it out of their system with the last season in the Metrodome. And tonight… Dickey will not be in the Metrodome. Instead, he’ll be in the homer friendly U.S. Cellular Field. Let’s hope that knuckleball is moving!
