Not even a “base running boner by Hairston” could bail out the Dodgers as they failed to tally a hit over the final 5+ innings, falling to the Padres 4-2.  Poor pitching by Randy Wolf, coupled with a 1 for 15 night from spots 1-4 in the lineup, doomed the Dodgers from the outset of the game.  The Dodgers bats were so quiet last night I actually fell asleep in seventh inning.  So much for the magic of Opening Day.

Chad Billingsley, Los Angeles Dodgers (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

billsFirst, the playoff debacle in Philly. Then the broken leg he suffered in the winter in an icy slip-and-fall. Two weeks before the season started, he strained a groin muscle. Billingsley has allowed too many walks and home runs this Spring, but he didn’t impress manager Joe Torre last spring and then went out and won 16 games. He might have gotten a little caught up in the moment of the playoffs, but he’s a competitor and still could be the club’s biggest winner this year.

Walter Silva, San Diego Padres (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

silvaWhen Spring Training started in February, Silva was back in Mazatlan, Mexico, after helping that Winter League team to the Caribbean World Series in Mexicali. That’s where the Padres spotted him. Silva came highly recommended from Mazatlan teammates Adrian and Edgar Gonzalez. Silva was signed two weeks after camp started and then missed time with an ankle sprain. He’s still building his endurance, so don’t expect the 32-year-old to work past six or so innings in his Major League debut. Silva offers a nice cutter and has a history of good command. It will be interesting to see how he fares moving forward.
