Can it really be 30 years since the Pirates won their last World Championship? Well, unfortunately Bucco fans, that’s exactly how long it has been since that memorable title.
The following is what happened 30 years ago today.
APRIL 6th, 1979 (PIT, 0-1): Pittsburgh opened up their 1979 campaign with a 3-2 loss against the visiting Montreal Expos at Three Rivers Stadium in front of 36,141 fans. After the Bucs tied the score at 2-2 with Omar Moreno knocking in Phil Garner in the bottom of the eighth, Pittsburgh closer Kent Tekulve proved to be his own worst enemy. The sidearmiong right-hander started off the 10th by hitting Andre Dawson, then allowed the speedy Dawson to get in scoring position with an errant throw on a pickoff attempt. Dawson would score later in the inning, courtesy of a two-out Dale Berra error off the bat of Ellis Valentine, which would prove to be the game-winner.
