The Twins took on the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday afternoon for the final time this spring, and the end result was a 4-4 tie, something you’ll only find in the exhibition season.
Kevin Slowey pitched well in five innings of work, but there were much bigger stories such as the return of Delmon Young to the lineup, the health of Nick Punto, and Joe Crede surviving another day after taking a heater to the knuckles just days ago.
The latest of the injury saga involves first basemen, Justin Morneau. The former MVP hasn’t swung since Monday, might not even do so today, and is only probable for the opener.
The good news with the optioning of infielder Matt Tolbert to triple-A is that it shows that Morneau for now at least, should be fine. Doesn’t it just seem like the whole roster is falling apart before things start?
The roster is set, but the lineup isn’t. The Twins still aren’t certain who’ll be in the outfield come Monday, and while Morneau should be fine, they’re still waiting on his hopeful progress in the final day of camp.
Luis Ayala will be in the bullpen, and other than last season, he’s been a very good pitcher. Ayala doesn’t have any nasty pitch, it’s all in his control.
This season while snow is in the forecast for the Opener, the Twins will be inside. Next season they won’t have that luxury. And to say the least, it might be cold.
