Derek Jeter got the first hit for a Yankee in the Stadium in the first inning, a solid double that sliced passed a diving Mike Fontenot down the left field line.  Robbie Cano christened the short porch with a two-run home run in the second inning, a rocket shot on a 1-1 pitch that was gone the very moment he hit it.  In the third inning, Hideki Matsui lifted a ball down the right field line that seemed to be hooking foul but miraculously straightened out, barely grazing the outside half of the foul pole for a two-run homer.  Perhaps the wide open breeze ways and concourses throughout the Stadium assisted.  An inning later, Cody Ransom gonged a three-run blast off the left field foul pole.  It was a brilliant night in the new Yankee Stadium.

Yankee pitcher Chien-Ming Wang gave up four runs to the Cub starters in the exhibition, exiting after five innings and 71 pitches.  Mariano Rivera and the bullpen shut the Cubs’ B-squad down for the final four innings.

It was a good evening for beginnings.  Thunderstorms dumped most of the rain from the sky by 5pm, giving the brand new drainage system (consisting of 14,000 linear feet of 8-inch perforated pipe) time to do it’s job.  Reggie Jackson delivered the ceremonial first pitch which sailed into Jorge Posada’s mitt under clear skies.  Irish Tenor Ronan Tynan sang “God Bless America” for the traditional seventh-inning interlude, then ventured into the stands to mingle with the fans.  Although the rain came and went throughout the game, the moon shone through the gusty skies in the bottom of the ninth as fans flowed out onto wide, stone concourses to the sound of Frank Sinatra singing “New York, New York.”

Tomorrow, the Cubs return for another exhibition at 1pm when they will face A.J. Burnett.

It’s going to take some getting used to the navy blue walls. With certain camera shots it looks like the old park, but it’s clearly not.

Some shots do look like the old park Drew. Then other shots a just completely different. The shot at field level into the OF is very strange to look at, maybe its the color of the Walls, like you said.Sometimes it seemed like the OF was smaller, though I know it isnt.

Nice description of the night RT. The photo’s are great, keep up the good work. 4 runs in 5 innings has to get better, but I’ll chalk it up to it’s still spring training. Posada got the ball stuck in his glove, but Johnny Bench would have a hard time throwing out Gathright. Lets hope Posada Wang and Matsui can stay healthy, and Wang can keep the sinker consistent.
