He said he took 25 swings in the cage and it went “very well.” He also took some ground balls and did some throwing.
The plan yesterday was for him to take BP on the field on Monday if Sunday’s cage session went well, so I presume that’s what’s going to happen.
I tried to pin manager Bob Geren down this morning on what he needed to see from Chavez for him to be ready for opening day. How many games? Does he need to be swinging well, or just healthy?
Not surprisingly, Geren didn’t really answer.
The A’s at some point might have to figure out if they even want Chavez to play in big league spring training games. If they do, those count against retroactive DL days. In other words, if the A’s decide he isn’t ready to be on the roster April 6, his 15 days on the DL would start after his last big league exhibition game. If the A’s think he’ll only be a few days late, they can have him play in minor league exhibition games, then put him on the DL retroactively, up to 10 days before opening day, so he could miss as few as the first five days of the season.
In other A’s news…
