Chris Getz named White Sox opening day second baseman  | read this item

In a not-so-surprising but still interesting announcement, Chris Getz will start at second base for the White Sox in the opener April 6 (h/t: SouthSideSox). This announcement ends the rampant (and generally unfounded) speculation that Gordon Beckham would unseat Getz and be the team’s starting second baseman. He’ll end up in the minors in 2009 and could be ready to go sometime in 2010.

So with this move, the White Sox are down to one (maybe two, if Bartolo Colon isn’t ready to go and the team needs a fifth starter) position battle that’s still up for grabs: center field. Nobody’s taken the reigns yet, leading me (and others, including Scot Gregor) to wonder if Kenny Williams will explore making a trade or late free agent signing to fill the gap in CF. If the White Sox can’t bring in somebody to fill the spot (Kenny Lofton!), then maybe they should consider this approach put forth by Jim over at Soxmachine. It’s creative, and certainly looks more appealing than any of the other options facing the White Sox right now.
