Livan Hernandez will more than likely be the Mets fifth starter come Opening Day (or whenever they need him), which was reinforced when the team sent Jon Niese to minor league camp today.

Niese, only 22-years-old, was Hernandez’s closest competition on the team.  Freddy Garcia, another candidate, has performed poorly and will likely be cut sometime this week.

Hernandez, in camp on a minor league deal worth $1 million, can earn another $1 million with performance bonuses.

Niese, as quoted by Adam Rubin:

“I’m surprised, for sure,” Niese said. “They just said I have to work on my command. They want me on a regular schedule.”
