Head Athletic Trainer for the Indians, Lonnie Soloff, had some frightening news today concerning the Indians once top prospect. Adam Miller just last week began to have problems bending the tip of his surgically repaired middle finger on his pitching hand. So the Indians shut him down for observation by hand specialists. Today word has it, according to Anthony Castrovince, that Miller’s career is now in jeopardy.
Basically, without surgery to repair “two pulley ligaments in his finger”, he will never regain the full range of motion in the finger and he will be forced to try and adapt how he pitches around the problem, which as of this morning was “so wild that the Indians’ training and coaching staffs have reason to question whether he will be able to adjust enough to be a competitive professional pitcher.”
The Indians are giving him 7-10 days to work it out before recommending the surgery. If Miller does have the surgery, he will again miss another 6-9 months of a season, in essence killing another year of development. And who knows if after the surgery how his finger will respond. The once bright future of this right-hander has quickly diminished, and may soon be gone. It is truly a tragic story.
