According to Baseball America‘s Matt Eddy, Tim Raines, Jr., son of former White Sox player/coach (and HOF candidate) Tim Raines, signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox. While minor league deals usually don’t get much attention, this is a noteworthy acquisition as Raines has a viable chance of seeing some major league action this season. The 29-year old has been putting up terrific numbers as of late, hitting .311 with 18 homers and 28 stolen bases last year with the Arizona Diamondbacks’ AAA affiliate in Tucson. While his plate patience is hardly ideal, Raines has gained quite a reputation for his speed and defensive skills, something that would be a real asset for the White Sox in the outfield. If he continues to hit around the .300 mark as he has in the last year and a half and the Sox need to make a call up during the season or in September, Raines could very well be one of the names in the mix.

At this point, I might want to take Rock Jr. as the leadoff hitter over anybody else. Owens needs to step it up big time…

Did I not just watch Tim Raines Jr. play for the LaNew Bears in Taipei, Taiwan? I guess he is here to play for a bit until the Sox come calling?
So the Sox sent him to Taiwan? I just saw Raines Jr play for the La New Bears of the CPBL the other night. Now that is a road game!
Tim Raines Jr was released April 6 a couple of days before the minor league season started. Right after that he signed with the Newark Bears of the Independent League to play for his father. During spring training he was in talks with the La New Bears, but never signed. Then 4 games into the Independent league season Tim asked to be released so he could sign with the La New Bears, I’m guessing he couldn’t resist the pay and the level of play there is pretty solid.
