On the mound…

Korean ace, Ryu Hyeon-jin, had issues with his command. He had trouble throwing strikes, but an overly aggressive Mexican team let him off the hook. It took Ryu 65 pitches to toss 2 2/3 innings. He was mercifully pulled before any real damage could be inflicted. The Korean bullpen was excellent. 5 Korean relievers combined to throw 6 2/3 shutout innings. Jeong Hyun-wook threw 2 2/3 scoreless and Yoon Seok-min tossed 1 1/3 scoreless with 3 K’s. Kim Kwang-hyeon faced 2 batters and recorded 2 outs.

At the plate…

The key word of the day for the Korean team was “solo homer.” They hit three of them. Lee Beom-ho delivered his 2nd WBC homer in the 2nd inning to put Korea on the board. Kim Tae-gyun clubbed another homer(this time he refrained from showboating) in the 4th and Koh Yeong-min added another solo bomb in the 5th. The Korean team jumped all over the Mexican bullpen in the 7th. When the dust finally settled the Korean team held an 8-2 lead and that would be our final. 1st baseman Kim Tae-gyun gets the line of the day by going 2-5 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI.

In the field…

2nd baseman Jeong Geun-woo left the game in the 4th inning. Lee Beom-ho made a throwing error on after making a nice pick on a sharp grounder to third. His throw took the 2nd baseman off the bag and extended the inning for Team Mexico. A double play ball was also mishandled by Jeong in the 2nd inning. The misplay kept the inning going. Without it, Ryu might have escaped unscathed. Team Korea also flashed some speed during this one. They stole three bases, including a double steal in the 7th inning. The Korean team essentially caught the entire Mexican infield napping.

Next up for the Koreans is a re-match with Japan on Tuesday at 8pm San Diego time or 12pm Tuesday afternoon Korean time.
