Shields Defeats Phils in Series Rematch  | read this item

James Shields pitched four innings of one-hit ball in his second start of the spring and Carl Crawford stole his first base of the spring, then was plated by an Evan Longoria sacrifice as the Rays topped the Phillies 3-2 today.  Newcomer Gabe Kapler hit a solo homer in the game as well.

Troy Percival pitched one inning and retired Ryan Howard, Geoff Jenkins and Greg Dobbs in order on three grounders.  Percival is returning from surgery and was pleased with his first outing of the spring.  Despite compiling a critical 28 saves for the Rays in 2008, Percival also spent three spells on the disabled list.  His health is a major concern to the team, even with other relievers Chad Bradford, Brad Balfour and any of several good young pitchers.

Shields will repeat his role as opening day starter from last year when the Rays begin their AL title defense at home against Boston on April 6.   The list of hurlers from previous years shows just how far the Rays have come since current number two man Scott Kazmir was the ace of the staff.
