Big day in A’s camp today. Eric Chavez was supposed to make his spring debut at third, but he was scratched because he hurt his surgically repaired right shoulder swinging a bat on Sunday. So that opened the door for Bobby Crosby to play third for the first time since he was in a Little League All-Star Game when he was 11.

Crosby played six innings in the A’s 5-4 victory over the Angels and had only one play. It was a slow roller that he fielded running toward the mound, not much different from a play he’d make at short. So the jury remains out on him at third.

Interestingly, manager Bob Geren said he wants Crosby to be able to play all four infield positions, and a corner outfield spot, eventually. For now, the A’s are working on him at second and third. He won’t play second for a while, though, because he said there is a lot to learn about making the pivot and taking throws from that side of the bag.

As for Chavez, he’s going to be out — no throwing or hitting — for at least a “few days,” Geren said.
