The Seattle Mariners jumped out to a 7-1 lead on the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first two outings, blew the entire lead in the middle innings and then broke a 7-7 tie with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to improve their spring record to 6-2-1.
Wladimir Balentien, who missed the first ten days of camp due to via problems, homered for the second consecutive day, while Russell Branyan hit his first home run in a Mariners uniform and added a double. Both home runs came in the first inning as Seattle scored four times in the first. Chris Shelton added a two-run single and Ken Griffey, Jr., playing in his first official Cactus League contest of the year, walked twice and singled sharply to left field.
Ryan Rowland-Smith became the first Seattle starter to last three innings this spring, allowing five hits and two runs. Right-hander Tyler Walker pitched a one scoreless inning, his third consecutive outing without allowing a run.
The Mariners have Monday off, but they’ll face the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday at 1:05PM in Peoria.
