The A’s have boasted for months how they have “four players who have hit 30 homers” in their lineup, with Jason Giambi, Matt Holliday, Eric Chavez and Jack Cust. That’s all great, but what order do you put them in? And who do you put around them?
One thing that seems obvious is that Matt Holliday has to hit fourth, because he’s the only righty in the bunch. That means the A’s won’t have more than two lefties in a row among the other three guys.
Personally, I’d go for Giambi third, because I figure he’s still good for the highest on-base percentage of the bunch, followed by Holliday. Then I’d go with Cust and then Chavez. If Chavez proves he’s healthy, he’s probably better than Cust, so you could flip ‘em.
There is some sentiment to putting Jack Cust in the No. 2 spot because of his high on-base percentage, but I think he’s too slow. I’d rather see someone like Travis Buck up there. Or even Mark Ellis.
So here’s my lineup:
Ryan Sweeney CF
Travis Buck RF
Jason Giambi 1B
Matt Holliday LF
Jack Cust DH
Eric Chavez 3B
Kurt Suzuki C
Mark Ellis 2B
Bobby Crosby SS
